About This Site

The Camping Backpacking is written for weekend campers and newer backpackers who want gear that holds up without paying for bragging rights. We cover backpacking packs, tents, sleeping pads, trekking poles and water filters, and every review comes from gear carried on real overnight trips in Kentucky and Tennessee.

Trail Safety

Camping and backpacking carry real risks that no piece of gear removes. Check the forecast and local fire restrictions before every trip, tell someone your route and return time, and carry a map, extra layers and enough food and water for a longer day than you plan.

Water filters reduce bacteria and protozoa but do not remove viruses or chemical contamination; follow the manufacturer's instructions, backflush and replace filters as directed, and never let a filter freeze once it has been wet. Never run a stove, heater or charcoal inside a tent or vestibule, because carbon monoxide builds up quickly in small spaces. Pitch tents away from dead trees and limbs, and know how to recognize hypothermia and heat illness.

Pack fit, trekking pole use and load weight affect joints and backs differently for everyone. If you have a medical condition or an injury, talk to a doctor or physical therapist before starting a backpacking program. Nothing on this site is medical or professional safety advice.
